STAC BOYS BASKETBALL: POWERHOUSE SETON CATHOLIC TOO MUCH FOR WAVERLY (December 13, 2025)
Valley Sports Report
BINGHAMTON — Powerhouse Seton Catholic overwhelmed Waverly here Saturday afternoon, blowing the game open with a 33-point third quarter en route to an 80-44 win in STAC Central Division boys basketball action.
"Considering the competition, I felt we played a solid first half of basketball, but didn’t capitalize on open shots once we broke their press," said longtime Waverly coach Lou Judson.
"We came out in the second half with little energy and urgency and they made us pay," he noted. "We have a lot to work on and this game will only make us better.
"I was pleased with our ability to consistently break their press, but didn’t have enough play-making to finish off plays, Judson added.
The Saints scored the first 10 points of the game, but 3-pointers by junior Bryce LaForest and sophomore Jack Pipher closed the gap to 10-6.
Seton Catholic finished off the quarter with an 11-5 to take a 21-11 lead, then out outscored the Wolverines 14-5 in the second quarter and went to the halftime intermission leading 35-16.
In the third quarter, former Susquehanna Valley standout Malik Wimberly pumped in 13 points, and the Saints made 14 of 15 free-throw attempts in a 33-10 blitz that extended their advantage to 68-26 heading into the final eight minutes.
Freshman Braiden Judson led Waverly with a career-high 13 points, including a 3-pointer and two old-fashion three-point plays. Senior Hogan Shaw scored 11 points, while junior Carson Rockwell had 10 points.
Junior Ben Shaw had three rebounds and three steals, while sophomore Sam Cheresnowsky led the Wolverines with four rebounds and two assists, and senior Carter Davies grabbed three boards.
"Braiden Judson came off the bench and led us in scoring," said Judson. "And, Jack Pipher was impressive at the defensive end against Division I standout Allen Eagles."
Wimberly and Allen Eagles led Seton Catholic, which made 24 of 25 free throws in the contest, with 19 points apiece.
Waverly, now 1-1, will open its home season Tuesday when it hosts Susquehanna Valley.
