Valley Sports ReportWAVERLY — Waverly used pressure defense and a strong shooting night to roll to a 78-33 win over Susquehanna Valley here Tuesday night in STAC boys basketball action.
The Wolverines forced 30 turnovers, and registered 13 steals in the win, while shooting 53.4 percent (31 of 58) from the field.
"We came out tonight and shot the ball well, and defended well," said Waverly coach Lou Judson. "We did what you'd like to do on your home floor.
"I was very pleased with how we played tonight," he noted.
After a strong first half, the Wolverines were just as good in the second half.
"We got a lot of guys playing time in the second half, but we're pretty deep," said Judson. "The guys coming off the bench for me, I would think have a good chance to start for many of the other teams in our league.
"I think we're loaded at the guard position," he noted. "I think we can wear teams down.
"We can full-court press or play zone ... we can do a lot of different things defensively.
"We're playing pretty good early on," added Judson. "Hopefully, we can continue it on Saturday against Athens."
Senior Hogan Shaw pumped in 12 points in the first quarter, and freshman Braiden Judson added six points to fuel a 22-6 blitz in the opening stanza.
Sophomore Sammy Cheresnowsky scored six points in the second quarter, and senior Porter Daddona added four points as Waverly used a 16-7 run to open up a 38-13 lead at the halftime intermission.
Hogan Shaw and junior Bryce LaForest each knocked down 3-pointers and scored five points apiece to help Waverly to an 18-13 advantage in the third quarter and a 56-26 lead heading into the final eight minutes.
Senior Carter Davis scored seven points and junior Ben Shaw added four points in the fourth quarter as the Wolverines closed the game with a 22-7 run.
Hogan Shaw led a balanced attack with 17 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, three rebounds and three steals, while Judson had 10 points, three rebounds, two assists, and three steals, and Cheresnowsky had 10 points and five rebounds.
Daddona scored eight points and grabbed a team-high eight boards in the win, while Ben Shaw had seven points, Davies had seven points and three rebounds, and LaForest had seven points and two assists.
Sophomore Jack Pipher added six points, five rebounds and one blocked shot for the Wolverines, while senior Peyton Robinson chipped in with four points, and junior Carson Rockwell contributed four rebounds, a team-high four assists and three steals
Sam Miller led SV with 12 points.
Waverly, now 2-1, will host Athens Saturday. The JV game is set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
