VALLEY SPORTS REPORT: TIOGA'S HOWEY HEADLINES ALL-VALLEY GIRLS SOCCER TEAM AS 'PLAYER OF YEAR;" WAVERLY'S OLMSTED, CLONCH, BOOTHBY-SCHOONOVER, TIOGA'S TOOMEY, POTTER ALSO EARN TOP HONORS (December 24, 2025)

Valley Sports Report
THE VALLEY — Freshman Grace Howey registered double-figures in goals and assists, and led Tioga to its second postseason win in program history. She is the 2025 VSR "Girls Soccer Player of the Year."
 
Waverly junior Makenzie Olmsted is the "Defensive Player of the Year," while Tioga junior Amelia Toomey is the "Newcomer of the Year," Waverly senior Claire Clonch is the "Keeper of the Year," and Waverly sophomore Lilly Boothby-Schoonover is the "Breakout Player of the Year."

Tioga's second-year coach Emily Potter is the "Coach of the Year."

Howey, who is also the "Offensive Player of the Year," is not afraid of physicality and has a sky-high soccer IQ. 

Howey, who is just as fast with the ball at her feet as she is without, scored 16 goals and dished out 12 assists.

A fierce, tireless and tenacious defender with good speed and a non-stop motor, Olmsted was also a threat at the offensive end. She finished the season with five goals and one assist.

A former volleyball player, Toomey made an immediate impact on the defensive end of the pitch for the Tigers with her physical brand of defense and strong leg.

Athletic with a high soccer IQ, Clonch recorded 158 saves in net for the Wolverines, who advanced to the Section IV, Class A championship game. She recorded three shutouts and six one-goal games.

Long and athletic, Boothby-Schoonover became a dangerous threat on the wing for the Wolverines. She finished the season tied for the team lead in goals (six) and assists (three).

In her second year, Potter directed the Tigers to an 8-8-1 season and into the Section IV, Class C quarterfinals by virtue of the second postseason win in program history.

Delanie Patton, senior, Athens:
A super-smart player with exceptional speed and a strong leg, Patton scored 12 goals and dished out three assists

Makenzie Olmsted, junior, Waverly: See above.

Sophia Haney, senior, Tioga: Haney, who had another knee surgery after injury her knee late in her junior season, got better and better as the season progressed. The program's all-time leading goal-scorer with 53, she finished the season with 12 goals and five assists.

Brinley Nichols, junior, Athens:
A heady player and a facilitator on the field, Nichols scored four goals and doled out a team-high five assists.

Kaitlyn Sutton, senior, Waverly: Fast and not afraid of contact, Sutton scored six goals and dished out three assists.

Maci Wheeler, sophomore, Waverly:
A superb defender, Wheeler also made her presence known on the offensive end with five goals and two assists.

The Second 7

Olivia Thompson, senior, Athens: A very good all-around athlete, Thompson scored five goals and had one assist.

Lilly Boothby-Schoonover, Waverly: See above.

Marci Moniz, junior, Tioga:
Athletic, with a good head for the game, Moniz was an integral part of the divisional champion Tigers, who also posted the second-ever postseason win. She recorded 132 saves in 19 games, had four one-goal games, including a 1-0 double-OT loss to Groton in the IAC Championship game, and two shutouts. 

Gianna Soprano, sophomore, Waverly: Fast with a good head for the game and a strong leg, Soprano had six goals and one assist.

Abby Burgess, senior, Athens: Extremely fast and not shy around contact, Burgess scored six goals.

Lizzie Gorsline, senior, Athens: A very good defender, Gorsline was a force in the midfield. She scored three goals and dished out a pair of assists.

Emily Zwierlein, senior, Tioga: 
A physical and fiery defender, Zwierlein was a key cog in Tioga's defense.
