STAC BOYS BASKETBALL: CORNING TOO MUCH FOR WAVERLY IN FINALS OF REGIONAL BRACKET AT PALMER TOURNAMENT (December 30, 2025)
Valley Sports ReportELMIRA — Corning turned a fast start into a 79-50 romp over Waverly here Tuesday evening in the championship game of the Regional bracket at the Josh Palmer Fund / Elmira Holiday Boys Basketball Classic.
"For being our first year in the Palmer tournament, I was extremely pleased with the organization and community support," said Waverly coach Lou Judson. "The quality of basketball in the Palmer tournament is quite impressive and we were honored to be a part of it.
"Tonight. we ran into one of the best teams in the state," noted Judson. "For our team and program, we got out of this tournament what we wanted - good competition and to challenge our team and players. I don’t think every team can say that.
"Corning is good, very good - they just keep coming at you, relentless defensively and weapons all over the floor," added Judson. "We will regroup and get ready for Troy on Saturday."
Sophomore Nolyn Proudfoot, who scored his 1,000th career point last year as a freshman, scored 13 of his game-high 24 points in the first quarter to help the Hawks to a 23-6 lead.
Sophomore Ben Shaw canned a pair of 3-pointers, and junior Bryce LaForest and senior Hogan Shaw each knocked down one trey, but Corning's Kohl Hogue scored nine points, Nolyn Proudfoot added seven, and Carter Proudfoot connected from behind the 3-point arc in a 24-14 advantage that stretched the Hawks' lead to 47-20 at the half.
Corning had six different players put their names in the scoring column in the third quarter, including Carter Proudfoot and Teigen Gill, who both canned 3-pointers, in a 22-15 spurt that extended the lead to 72-35 entering the final eight minutes.
Hogan Shaw led Waverly with 11 points and three rebounds, while Peyton Robinson scored nine points, Ben Shaw had eight points, three rebounds and four steals, and LaForest scored eight points.
Freshman Braiden Judson added five points and four boards for the Wolverines, while sophomore Jack Pipher chipped in with four points and one blocked shot, junior Carson Rockwell grabbed six boards and blocked one shot, and sophomore Sam Cheresnowsky hauled down four rebounds.
Carter Proudfoot, who canned a trio of 3-pointers and Hogue each scored 13 points for the Hawks, and Kyler Stevenson added 10 points.
Waverly returns to action Saturday afternoon when it hosts Troy.
