STAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: WAVERLY FALTERS IN SECOND HALF OF 50-43 LOSS TO HORSEHEADS (24 PHOTOS) (December 30, 2025)

ELMIRA — Waverly built a 10-point halftime lead, but went cold in the second half, and Horseheads rallied for a 50-43 win in the third-place game here Tuesday afternoon in the  National Girls Division at the Josh Palmer Fund / Elmira Holiday Basketball Classic.

Junior Ryleigh Judson scored seven points, and senior Kaitlyn Sutton canned a 3-pointer to help Waverly to a 17-14 lead after the first eight minutes.

Judson scored five more points in the second quarter, including a 3-pointer, while sophomore Kaylin Twedt was 4-for-4 from the free-throw line, and Sutton drained another 3-pointer in a 14-7 run that extended the Wolverine lead to 31-21 at the halftime intermission.

Waverly one managed one field goal in the third quarter as the Blue Raiders roared back with a 17-5 blitz to take a 38-36 lead heading into the final eight minutes.

Sutton knocked down another 3-pointer and scored six points in the fourth quarter, but Hogsheads held her teammates to just one point in the final eight minutes, putting the game away with a 12-7 spurt to end the game.

Judson led Waverly with 15 points, while Sutton scored 12 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, Twedt added eight points, and sophomore Kendall Rockwell chipped in with four points.

Samantha Bonnell scored a game-high 23 points to pace the Blue Raiders, while Maggie Tremaine had 13 points, and Gianna Hughey added 10 points.

Waverly returns to action Saturday when it hosts Troy.
