STAC BOYS BASKETBALL: WAVERLY RALLIES IN SECOND HALF TO TOP TROY, 68-64 (22 PHOTOS) (January 3, 2026)
Valley Sports ReportWAVERLY — Waverly trailed by 12 at half, but senior Hogan Shaw and freshman Braiden Judson combined for 23 second-half points to lead the Wolverines to a come-from-behind, 68-64, win over Troy here Saturday afternoon in non-league boys basketball action.
"I'm not sure the last time one of my teams was down 12 at the half and came back and won," said Waverly coach Lou Judson.
"My team showed a lot of fight and resolve against a Troy team that shot the ball very, very well tonight.
"We made enough plays down the stretch to win the basketball game," added Judson.
Overall, Hogan Shaw and Braiden Judson combined for 48 points in the win.
"Hogan Shaw showed his senior leadership and played extremely well throughout the game," said Lou Judson.
"Braiden Judson played his best high school basketball game, showing up when we needed him to in the third quarter," added Lou Judson.
Hogan Shaw knocked down a pair of 3-pointers ad scored 10 points in the first quarter, and Judson added nine points, but Troy knocked down four of its 12 3-pointers in the opening stanza and the game was tied at 21-21.
Hogan Shaw scored seven more points in the second quarter, but the Trojans' Trey Teribury pumped in 15 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, to fuel a 21-9 run that put Troy up 42-30 at the halftime break.
"We came out and didn't play a very good first half," said Lou Judson. "And, (Troy) made a lot of tough shots."
Judson scored nine points in the third quarter, while Hogan Shaw and sophomore Jack Pipher combined for nine points in a 22-9 blitz that gave the Wolverines a 52-51 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
"The key tonight was obviously our third quarter," said Lou Judson.
"Jack Pipher played a pretty solid second half on their best player in Trey Teribury, and it kind of set the tone for the third quarter.
"We switched up defenses, and I think it threw them out of rhythm offensively," noted Lou Judson.
"Offensively, we had to spread the floor and decided to try and take them one-on-one to find the best match-ups we could and it was to our advantage," he added.
Hogan Shaw scored six points in the fourth quarter, and Pipher added four, but limited the Trojans to just 13 points in the closing stanza to extend their lead.
Hogan Shaw led Waverly with 28 points, including five 3-pointers, three rebounds, two steals and two assists, and Judson had 20 points, four rebounds, three assists, two steals, and one blocked shot.
Ben Shaw had eight points, four boards, two assists, and three steals in the win, while Jack Pipher had eight points and five boards, senior Porter Daddona chipped in with four points and eight rebounds.
Junior Bryce LaForest grabbed four rebounds for the Wolverines and junior Carson Rockwell added three boards and two assists.
Trey Teribury led Troy with 26 points, including six 3-pointers and 20 first-half points, while Pryor Teribury had 13 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, and Spencer Martin added 10 points.
A Troy grad and one of the best players to even come of the basketball program, Judson is now 4-2 against his alma mater.
"It's always special to coach against Troy," said Judson. "I have a lot of friends and family and it's the only game they get out to see.
"Troy's strong traditions in sports, especially in basketball, is the best in the NTL," added Judson. "It's always special for us to win a game against a Troy team."
After playing consecutive non-league games against Notre Dame, Corning and Troy, the Wolverines, now 5-3, return to action Tuesday when they host Chenango Valley.
"We've had a tough stretch of basketball games ... now we're getting back into league play," said Judson. "There are no easy nights any more in our league."
