STAC JV BOYS BASKETBALL: WAVERLY AVENGES EARLIER LOSS WITH 54-32 ROMP OVER CHENANGO VALLEY (January 7, 2026)
Valley Sports ReportWAVERLY — Waverly avenged its first loss of the season with a 54-32 romp over Chenango Valley here Tuesday evening in STAC Central Division boys basketball action.
"Part of my joy of coaching is seeing my players show improvement during the course of the season," said Waverly coach Mike Croft.
"We avenged our first loss of season and did it without our leading scorer who was hurt in Troy game," noted Croft. "If this happened earlier in the season, I don’t think we’d be able to win the game.
"It just shows how much all 11 of them have been improving since game one," he added.
Axel Murray, who scored five points in the opening stanza, and Drew Croft each canned 3-pointers in the first quarter to help the Wolverines to a 12-10 lead.
Brycen Fiske and Ian Johnston each five points, including one 3-pointer apiece, and Brock Rose added a trey as Waverly took control in the second quarter with a 15-4 run that pushed the lead to 27-14 at the half.
Croft scored six points and Murray had four points in the third quarter, while Johnston and Fiske each aded 3-pointers to help the Wolverines extend their lead with an 18-14 advantage in the stanza. Waverly led 45-28 heading into the final eight minutes.
Johnston had 12 points, eight rebounds and two assists, and Fiske had 12 points, four boards and two assists to lead a balanced Waverly attack, and Murray had 11 points, three rebounds, three assists, for steals, and three blocked shots.
Croft had nine points, three rebounds and four assists in the win, while Rose scored five points, and Maddex Presher chipped in with three rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
Waverly returns to action Friday when it hosts Chenango Forks.
