SELINSGROVE — Athens pulled pulled out a win over Selinsgrove Wednesday night, but powerhouse Hughesville proved a bit too much as the Wildcats split a pair of girls wrestling duals.

Athens 42, Selinsgrove 36
Freshman Skylynn Payne scored a key fall late in the match to stop Selinsgrove's momentum in the Wildcats' 42-36 win.

After the Seals opened the match with a fall at 100 pounds, sophomore Alyssa Rinebold pinned Gianna Coker in 58 seconds to even the match at 6-6.

A pin at 112 and a forfeit at 118 put Selinsgrove ahead 18-6, but four straight bonus-point wins put the Wildcats ahead 30-18.

Junior Joyce Clink started the Athens run with a 52-second fall of Mikayla Martin at 124 pounds, and freshman Chelsey Renninger tied the match at 18-18 with a pin of Kalyssa Longer at 130 pounds in 1:42.

Sophomore Memphis Paul received a forfeit at 136 pounds to give the Wildcats the lead, and Athens ace senior Hanna Rathbun scored a fall over Elizabeth Varner at 142 pounds in 1:28 to make it 30-18.

The Seals tied the match with quick pins at 148 and 155 pounds, then took a 36-30 lead with a forfeit at 170 pounds.

Payne tied the match at 190 pounds with a pin of Bella Miller in 1:39, then senior Leah Nason received a forfeit to close the match and give the Wildcats the win.

Hughesville 45, Athens 30
Hughesville rolled out to an early 21-0 lead and Athens never threatened in the Spartans' 45-30.

Junior Joyce Clink scored a 92-second fall at 124 pounds in 1:32 to close the gap to 21-6, and sophomore Memphis Paul recorded a fall at 136 pounds, decking Madoka Charles in 1:50 to make it 27-12.

Senior Hanna Rathbun received a forfeit at 142 pounds to close the gap to 27-18, but the Spartans used two falls and a forfeit to take a 45-18 to clinch the victory.

Freshman Skylynn Payne received a forfeit at 190 pounds, and senior Leah Nason scored a fall of Emmalia Poust in 1:18 at 235 pounds to close out the match.

Athens returns to action Jan. 16-17 at the rugged Coal Cracker Invite.
