Valley Sports ReportWAVERLY — Waverly scored the first 15 points of the game, and led by 36 midway through the second quarter en route to a 78-40 non-league win over Addison here Tuesday night in boys basketball action.
"I thought we came out and played really well in the first half," said Waverly coach Lou Judson.
"Our pressure led to a lot of turnovers, which led to a lot of lay-ups and 3-point shots made," he added. "We just overwhelmed them early."
Freshman Braiden Judson took advantage of Waverly's press for a pair of lay-up in the opening minute of the game, and senior Hogan Shaw canned a pair of 3-pointers in the Wolverines' game-opening, 15-0, run.
Tyler Miller scored with 4:55 remaining in the first quarter t put Addison on the board, but moments later sophomore Jack Pipherdrained a 3-pointer to give Waverly an 18-2 lead.
Addison trimmed the deficit to 15 points, at 22-7, to end the first quarter.
Things got worse for the visitors as the Wolverines ripped off 21 unanswered points to start the second quarter, with Pipher scoring 10 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, in the run.
Hogan Shaw added seven points, including a 3-pointer, in the second quarter, while Judson added six points, and junior Chase Wheeler knocked down a 3-pointer, as Waverly outscored Addison, 29-10, to take a 51-17 lead into the halftime locker room.
Hogan Shaw added seven more points, including a 3-pointer, in the third quarter, and senior Porter Daddona added six points as Waverly used a 19-11 advantage in the stanza to carry a 70-28 lead into the final eight minutes.
The Wolverines improve to 8-3 and have won their last three games by 38, 27 and 16 points.
"We're playing really well right now," said Judson.
"The kids have really bought into what we're doing," he noted. "They seem a lot more unselfish now, moving the basketball and trying to find the open guy.
"It's a fun group to coach. I have a lot of guys who can come off the bench and play, too," added Judson. "Some guys are getting some extra playing time in these games, and that's a nice situation to be in as a coach."
Hogan Shaw led Waverly with 22 points, including four 3-pointers, while Judson had 16 points, four rebounds, two assists, and three steals, and Pipher had 15 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, three rebounds, two assists, and four steals.
Senior Carter Davies had 11 points and had seven boards in the win, while Daddona added six points and eight rebounds, and Wheeler grabbed three rebounds.
Henry Strauss led Addison with 15 points, including four 3-pointers, and Sawyer Westervelt added 11 points.
Waverly returns to action Saturday afternoon when it hosts powerhouse Seton Catholic.
