STAC GIRLS WRESTLING: WAVERLY WINS WEST / METRO DUALS TITLE WITH 5-0 MARK (21 PHOTOS) (January 15, 2026)

HORSEHEADS — Waverly reeled off five straight victories to win the STAC West / Metro Duals here Thursday night at the Horseheads Middle School.

The Wolverines, now 7-1, ripped off wins over Elmira, U-E, Corning, Horseheads, and Ithaca.

Freshman Gianna Zieniuk paced the Wolverines with a 5-0 mark, including four pins and one technical fall, while seniors Sydney Rosenbloom and Emma Vanderhoof, juniors Abby Sickler and Aby Reedy, and 7th-grader Amelia Wright were all 4-1. Senior Elona Holmes was 3-0, including a pair of forfeits.

Waverly 42, Elmira 17
Waverly trailed 10-0 after the first two weight classes, but reeled off nine straight wins for a 42-17 win over Elmira in the opening match of the night.

Freshman Gianna Rylott put the Wolverines on the board with a 12-2 technical fall at 107 pounds, and senior Sydney Rosenbloom (2:00 at 114 pounds), junior Abby Sickler (57 seconds at 120), senior Emma Vanderhoof (21 seconds at 126), and 7th-grader Amelia Wright (1:30 at 132) scored consecutive first-period pins to put Waverly ahead 24-11.

After a forfeit to sophomore Faith Hyjek at 138 pounds, freshman Gianna Zieniuk scored a 44-second fall at 145 pounds, and 8th-grader Jillian Presher notch a fall in 2:32 at 152 pounds.

Junior Aby Reedy closed out Waverly's scoring with a 2-1 win over Amelia Harrington at 185 pounds.

Waverly 35, U-E 25
The Wolverines won seven straight bouts through the middle of the match to pull out a 35-25 win over Union-Endicott, which also includes wrestlers from M-E and Vestal.

U-E won by fall at 100 and 107 to take a 10-0 lead, but Waverly quickly tied the score on pins by Rosenbloom in 1:16 at 114 pounds, and Sickler in  in 1:57 at 120 pounds.

The Wolverines took the lead for good with a forfeit to 8th-grader Gabbi Sinsabaugh at 126 pounds, then four straight first-period falls iced the win.

Vanderhoof started the run with a 55-second pin at 132 pounds, and Wright registered a 65-second fall at 138 pounds. Zieniuk followed with a 33-second pin at 145, and Presher finished off the run with a 44-second pin at 152 to make it 35-10.

Waverly 41, Corning 19

The middle of Waverly's line-up carried it to another one, this time a 41-19 win over Corning to improve to 3-0 on the night.

The Wolverines led 10-9 in the early going, thanks to forfeits to Rylott at 107 and Sinsabaugh at 120, then four straight wins gave them a commanding lead.

Sickler started the run with a pin of Sadie Kio in 3:48 at 126 pounds, then Vanderhoof received a forfeit at 1:32. Pins by Wright in 1L21 at 138 pounds, and Zieniuk in 28 seconds at 145 pounds put the Wolverines ahead 30-9.

Waverly picked up forfeit to Reedy at 165 pounds, and senior Elona Holmes at 235 pounds for their final points of the match.

Waverly 34, Horseheads 25
Waverly took advantage of a 15-point edge in forfeit points to pull out a 34-25 win over Horseheads in the penultimate match of the night.

Waverly led 10-9 heading into the 126-pound match-up, thanks to forfeits to 7th-grader Aniyah Rought at 100 pounds, and Rosenbloom at 114 pounds.

In the 126-pound match, Sinsabaugh scored a pin in 1:19 to make it 15-9. Vanderhoof then received a forfeit at 132 pounds to extend the lead to 20-9.

After a Horseheads pin at 138 pounds, Zieniuk scored an 11-0 technical fall at 145 pounds to make it 24-15.

Horseheads closed the gap to 24-20 with a pin by Lily Garrabrant at 152 pounds, but a forfeit to Reedy at 165, and a 23-second pin by Holmes at 185 sealed the win.

Waverly 45, Ithaca 10
Waverly closed out its championship run by winning five of the seven contested weight classes in a convincing 45-10 win over Ithaca.

After a pair of forfeits gave Waverly a 10-0 lead, Rosenbloom scored the fastest fall of the night for the Wolverines, finishing off her opponent in 18 seconds.

After another forfeit to the Wolverines, the Little Red won back-to-back matches via fall at 126 and 132 pounds to close the gap to 20-10.

Pins by Amelia Wright in 1:17 at 138 points, and Zieniuk in 19 seconds at 145 pounds extended the lead to 30-10.

Waverly's only other win on the mat was a 34-second pin by Reedy at 185 pounds.

Waverly returns to action Monday at the Windsor Lady Black Knights Invitational.
