IAC BOYS BASKETBALL: BOMBARD'S GAME-WINNER LIFTS TIOGA PAST NEWFIELD, 42-40 (January 21, 2026)
Valley Sports ReportNEWFIELD — Junior Jackson Bombard's steal for a lay-up with seven seconds remaining proved to be the game-winner in Tioga's 42-40 victory here Wednesday night in IAC South Small School Division boys basketball action.
"Tonight was a great win for the team," said Tioga coach Connor Hutchinson. "The game was very physical, their crowd was very loud, and the guys did a very good job keeping their heads in the game.
"Newfield had several little runs throughout the game, but we weathered them and kept answering," he noted. "The defensive effort tonight out of the guys was outstanding all 32 minutes.
"Newfield also got after it on defense, but I thought offensively we did a good job attacking, and getting good shots for the most part, and enough fell to win.
"I’m very happy for the guys we were able to get this one," Hutchinson added.
The Tigers slow offensively and trailed 11-8 after one quarter, and 17-14 at the half.
Senior James Miller canned a trio of 3-pointers in the third quarter to kick the Tioga offense into gear, but Newfield matched their effort, and led 31-28 heading into the final eight minutes.
Bombard scored six points in the fourth quarter, including the game-winner, and senior Dominic Palmer and junior Gavin Kithcart added four points apiece in a 14-9 run that give the Tigers the win.
Kithcart led Tioga with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Bombard had 12 points and four assists, Miller added nine points and three boards, and Palmer chipped in with six points and 12 rebounds.
Tioga, now 6-5, returns to action Friday when it hosts Marathon.
