WAVERLY — Waverly played four consistent quarters en route to a 54-27 win over Owego Free Academy here Thursday in STAC Central Division junior varsity girls basketball action.

Kezlyn DeKay scored seven points in the first quarter, and Taylin Gonzalez added four points as Waverly built an early 15-9 lead.

Adrianna Foster scored six points in the second quarter, and DeKay added four to fuel a 14-5 run that put the Wolverines up 29-14 at the half.

Gonzalez scored six points in the third quarter and Sydney Donovan added a 3-pointer as Waverly used a 13-7 run to take a 42-21 lead into the final eight minutes.

DeKay canned a pair of 3-pointers and Waverly closed the game with a 12-6 run.

DeKay led a trio of Waverly scorers in double-figures with 17 points, and had three assists, three steals, and three blocked shots, while Gonzalez had 12 points and four steals, and Foster had 10 points, nine rebounds, four assists, three steals, and one blocked shot.

Raygane Oakes added six points and three rebounds in the win, while Meeya Wheeler chipped in with four points and seven steals, Paige Bubniak grabbed five boards and three steals, Sophia Dorsey hauled down five rebounds and blocked one shot, and Isabella McEwen pulled down three rebounds.

Saturday
Horseheads 41, Waverly 31
At Horseheads, Waverly shook off a miserable start, but Horseheads finished strong for a 41-31 non-divisional STAC win Saturday morning.

Waverly started the game stone cold from the field and did not score in the first eight minutes, but its defense limited the Blue Raiders to just four points in the opening stanza.

The Wolverine offense clicked into gear in the second quarter as Kezlyn DeKay scored six points, including a 3-pointer, and Waverly went 7-for-12 from the free-throw line in a 16-8 run that put them up 16-12 at the half.

Horseheads rallied in the third quarter with a 12-7 run that put them ahead 24-23 heading into final eight minutes.

The Blue Raiders closed the game with a 17-8 blitz to nail down the win.

DeKay and Taylin Gonzalez scored eight points apiece to lead Waverly, while Raygane Oakes added five points, and Isabella McEwen chipped in with four points.

Waverly returns to action Friday when it hosts Norwich.
