NTL GIRLS BASKETBALL: ATHENS RIDES STRONG DEFENSE TO 35-12 WIN OVER WELLSBORO (February 7, 2026)
Valley Sports ReportWELLSBORO — Athens rode a strong defensive effort to a 35-12 win over Wellsboro here Saturday afternoon in NTL Large School Division girls basketball action.
Junior McKenna Jarvis knocked down an early 3-pointer, and scored seven points in the first quarter to help the Wildcats to a 9-4 lead after the first eight minutes.
Athens outscored Wellsboro, 7-5, in the second quarter to take a 16-9 lead into the halftime locker room.
The Wildcat defense was even better in the second half, allowing just three points — all in the third quarter.
Jarvis scored six points in the third quarter, and sophomore Allie Kemp added four to fuel a 10-3 run the put the Wildcats up 25-12.
Freshman Alexis Mayo scored seven points in Athens' 9-0 game-closing fourth-quarter run.
Jarvis led Athens with 16 points, five rebounds and four steals, while Alexis Mayo had nine points and four boards, junior Brielle Mayo scored six points, Kemp chipped in with four points and two rebounds, and junior Megan Morgan had five boards and two steals.
Athens returns to action Monday when it hosts Wyalusing.
JV — Athens 21, Wellsboro 11: Alexis Mayo led Athens with nine points.
