NTL SWIMMING: ATHENS BOYS SALVAGE TIE WITH DANVILLE WITH 1-2 FINISH IN FINAL EVENT; LADY 'CATS FALL (February 10, 2026)
Valley Sports ReportDANVILLE — The Athens boys won 10 of 12 events, but needed a 1-2 finish in the meet-closing 400-yard freestyle relay to over Danville's superior depth and salvage an 86-86 tie here Tuesday afternoon in non-league boys swimming & diving action.
The tie also maintains the Wildcats' unbeaten season as they wrap up the duals season with a 9-0-1 mark.
Senior Evelyn Panek managed the Lady Wildcats only two wins in a 105-60 setback to the powerhouse Danville squad.
BOYS
Athens 86, Danville 86Juniors Brayden Pettitt, Eli Hicks, and Jacob Shores were quad-winners for the Wildcats
Athens trailed 84-74 heading into the final event of the meet — the 400 free relay.
Pettitt, Hicks, Shores and and senior Lezak won the 400-yard freestyle relay in a time of 3:30.82, and the foursome of juniors Dominic Musick and Matthew Rossettie, sophomore Alexander Stedge, and freshman Shayan Ankam finished second in 4:04.1 to earn 12 teams points, while Danville picked up two for a third-place finish.
Pettitt won the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 54.02 seconds.
Pettit also won the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 56.91 seconds, and junior Matt Rossettie was third in 1:24.66.
Hicks won the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 22.86 seconds.
Hicks led a sweep in the 100-yard freestyle, clocking in at 50.59 seconds, while Musick was second in 52.86 seconds, and Lezak was third in 53.06 seconds.
Shores won the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 2:03.12. He also won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:42.0.
Pettit, Hicks, Shores, and Musick teamed to win the 200-yard freestyle relay in a time of 1:34.1.
Lezak won the 200-yard IM in a time of 2:20.98.
Freshman Shayan Ankam was third in the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:17.92.
GIRLS
Danville 105, Athens 60Panek won the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 26.47 seconds, and Thompson was second in 27.29 seconds.
Panek also won the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 58.53 seconds, and junior Alana Reyes was third in 1:03.99.
Senior Elizabeth Denlinger finished second in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 2:10.24.
Denlinger was also second in the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:18.94, and senior Madeline Henderson was third in 1:26.09.
Senior Olivia Thompson was second in the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 1:10.88.
Penelope Grubb finished second in the 1-meter diving competition with 140.2 points.
Junior Kaitlyn Leonard finished third in the 200-yard IM in a time of 2:49.5. She was also third in the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 1:25.75.
