STAC BOYS BASKETBALL: WAVERLY STEAMROLLS OWEGO, 89-29 (16 PHOTOS) (February 11, 2026)

SHAW BREAKS SCHOOL-RECORD FOR CAREER 3-POINTERS

Valley Sports Report
WAVERLY — Waverly jumped out to a double-digit lead early, and never looked back in an 89-29 rout of Owego here Wednesday night in STAC Central Division boys basketball action.

"We're playing pretty solid basketball right now," said Waverly coach Lou Judson.

"Going into Senior Night and Parents' Night you're always worried about distractions, and using a different line-up to get your seniors in. I’m proud of my seniors, they played very well tonight.

"We started off a little slow, but got it going pretty good in the second quarter," he noted. "We were moving the ball, finding the open guys, and making shots. And, we're defending and rotating in our defense.

"We're doing all the things we've been working on in practice, and now it's coming to fruition in games," added Judson. "The guys bought in about three weeks ago. They understand what it takes to play at a high level, and they're doing it right now.

Senior Hogan Shaw led all scorers with 15 points, including three 3-pointers. Shaw's third 3-pointer came early in the third quarter and gave him 178 for his career, eclipsing the career mark of 177 set by Joey Tomasso two years ago.

"He scored his 1,000th point two weeks ago, and tonight with his third 3-pointer he passed Joey Tomasso to become  No. 1 on the program's all-time list," said Judson. "He's had quite a few accomplishments the last few weeks — he remains humble and just wants us to do well in the playoffs.

"I'm glad it happened tonight at home on Senior Night," noted Judson. "He's very deserving, and I'm very proud of him.

"He's been shooting the ball extremely well, and when he gets it going, he gets it going," added Judson.

Sophomore Jack Pipher pumped in nine points, including a 3-pointer, in the first quarter, and junior Ben Shaw was 4-for-4 from the free-throw line to help Waverly to an 18-6 lead after the opening eight minutes.

Hogan Shaw knocked down two 3-pointers, and scored 12 points in the second quarter, while senior Porter Daddona scored seven points — a 3-pointer and 4-for-4 from the line — and senior Carter Davies added five points, including a trey, to fuel a 28-10 blitz that out the Wolverines up 46-16 at the halftime break.

Ben Shaw drained a pair of 3-pointers, and Pipher and Hogan Shaw each hit one 3-pointer in Waverly's 19-9 third-quarter run. The Wolverines led 65-25 heading the final eight minutes.

Juniors Bryce LaForest and Eric Lewis each hit 3-pointers and scored five points in the fourth quarter, while Davies and senior Trevor Blauvelt added four points apiece, and sophomore Chase Wheeler knocked down a 3-pointer in Waverly's game-closing 24-4 blitz.

Waverly, which made a school-record 16 3-pointers Monday night at Horseheads, made 12 in the win over Owego.

Hogan Shaw had three rebounds and three assists to go along with his game-high 15 points, while Pipher had 14 points and six boards, Davies scored 12 points, and Daddona had 11 points, nine rebounds and four assists.

Ben Shaw had 10 points, eight rebounds, and three assists in the win, while Blauvelt had seven points, three rebounds and two assists, and LaForest scored seven points.

Lewis added four points and three boards for the Wolverines, while sophomore Sam Cheresnowsky had three assists and two steals, freshman Braiden Judson and junior Carson Rockwell grabbed three rebounds apiece, and Wheeler chipped in with three points, two boards, and one blocked shot.

Judson was a bit surprised by the 60-point win.

"I think it's the first time since I've been coaching that we've swept Owego.

"We beat them by five in overtime at their place, so to get them on our home floor and win the way we did, I would have never through this possible to be honest with you," he said.

The game also marked the end of longtime Owego coach Chris Evans' career. Evans is stepping down after 18 years at the reigns in Owego.

"We recognized Coach Evans tonight before the game," said Judson. "I have a lot of respect for what he's done with that program. He's done things the right way.

"I've always thought he's held true to his values and coached the game of basketball the way it's supposed to be coached," he noted "For many, many years he's done an outstanding job at the collegiate level, and at the high school level.

"We've battled for many, many years, and he's gotten me more than I've beaten him.

"Tonight was his last game," added Judson. "It's going to be hard not seeing him on the sidelines next year, but I'm kind of glad because his kids are always prepared, and he's tough to beat."

Waverly, now 13-6, wraps up the regular season Tuesday when it hosts Whitney Point, immediately following the Waverly girls game against Elmira.
