Valley Sports ReportWELLSBORO — Junior Jordan Brown won his second North Section title in a row, and freshman Bryan Roof III placed fifth here Saturday at the District 4, North Section Tournament at Wellsboro High School.
Assistant coaches Bryan Roof II and Gavin McCutcheon were pleased with the team’s performance.
"There were times we could have wrestled better, but overall we’re happy," said Roof II.
"We had a ninth-grader who battled back to win matches in his first year in the sport, and another freshman who continues to step up against tougher competition," noted Roof II. "Ending the night with a Northern Section champion was great.
“We have a lot of kids who are new to wrestling, but they show up every day ready to work hard, support each other, and improve," he added. "That’s how we continue building a small but promising program at our school."
Last year, Brown became the first Redskin wrestler since 2016 to win a North Section title.
"It feels pretty good, a nice little repeat here," said Brown on winning his second straight title.
Brown, the top seed, went 3-0 to win the 172-pound bracket.
Brown needed 74 seconds in the quarterfinals to forge a 17-1 technical fall of North Penn-Liberty's Travis Stubblefield.
In the semifinals, Brown scored a seven-point move in the first period and topped Towanda's Kolton McPeak, 7-0.
In the finals, Brown scored a first-period takedown for a 3-0 lead over Canton's Blaine Wesneski, then hit a five-point move at the end of the second period to take an 8-1 lead into the final two minutes.
Brown registered a reversal with 15 seconds remaining to secure a 10-1 major decision.
"The game plan was to go out and score as many points as I could," said Brown. "I felt comfortable the whole match."
Brown is keep his nose to the grindstone heading into Districts.
"I'm going to focus on my conditioning, and staying mentally prepare. I need to make sure I don't step off my training," he said.
Roof, the seventh seed, went 2-2 to finish fifth in 121-pound bracket.
Roof dropped a 16-3 major decision to Canton's Carson Castle in the quarterfinals, but bounced back with a 6-0 win over Wyalusing's Austin Jones, thanks to takedowns in each of the first two periods.
In the consolation finals, Roof lost via second-period fall to Williamson's Walker Hyde.
He finished off his day hitting a seven-point move midway through the third period to pull out a 9-5 decision over Troy's Anthony Jordan.
Roof is the alternate at 121 pounds for next weekend's District 4 Championships.
Freshman Amicio Lamanna was 0-2 in the 127-pound weight class.
