STAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: WAVERLY FALLS TO BINGHAMTON, 44-36, IN LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME (February 24, 2026)

Valley Sports Report
BINGHAMTON — Binghamton enjoyed a big third quarter, and it was the difference in a 44-36 win over Waverly here Tuesday night in the STAC junior varsity girls basketball championship game.

"It was an amazingly competitive game between two really good JV basketball teams," said Waverly coach Brian Wendela.

"Binghamton is one of the most athletic teams I’ve seen in 10 years of coaching at this level and they are really good at what they try to do.

"Our girls bought in to what we wanted to do like they have all year and competed for four quarters, playing hard-nosed basketball and trying to execute the game plan," noted Wendela. "It’s all I can ask of them. The effort was amazing.

"This JV team is a great group of young ladies and have been since day 1 a year ago," added Wendela. "They may have lost on the scoreboard tonight, but they will always have special significance to me."

Kezlyn DeKay knocked down a 3-pointer and three of her teammates added two points as Waverly battled Binghamton even, at 9-9, in the opening stanza.

Waverly was held to three points — all by Addison Foster — in the second quarter, but the Wolverines defense limited the Patriots to just six points and trailed 15-12 at the halftime intermission.

Binghamton made 7 of 8 free-throw attempts in the third quarter in a 19-11 advantage to take a 34-23 lead into the final eight minutes. Waverly made 7 of 11 free-throw attempts to stay in the game.

DeKay canned her second trey and scored five points in the fourth quarter, and Taylin Gonzalez added four points as Waverly outscored Binghamton 13-10 in the final eight minutes.

Gonzalez led Waverly with 11 points, including nine in the second half, two rebounds, and two steals, while DeKay scored eight points, and Foster added seven points, four rebounds, and three steals.

Isabella McEwen chipped in with four points, while Sophia Dorsey had three boards and two steals, and Paige Bubniak had two assists.

Waverly wraps up the season with a 17-3 record.
