ALBANY — By the narrowest of margins, Tioga claimed its sixth Division 2 state title in seven years here over the weekend at the New York State Wrestling Championships at the MVP Arena.
The Tigers, led by two-time state champ junior Declan McKee, and runner-up senior Jayden Duncanson, amassed 75 team points to edge out Section V's Honeoye Falls-Lima, which had a pair of state champs in Christopher Noto and Jacob McVige, by 1.5 points.
Defending state champ Waverly, with five place-winners, finished third with 67.5 points, while Eden was fourth with 62.5 points, and Southwestern was fifth with 58 points.
"This is a great group of kids," said Tioga coach Kris Harrington. "To finish the season this way is special.
"I think we were a little bit of an underdog this year, but I told you last year, once we got healthy this year, we'd be back," he noted.
"To see kids get better every week was just outstanding," he noted. "It's a testament to the kids and the parents, and Tioga in general.
"We have a great administration that supports us, and a great booster club that helps us get to do all the things we get to do," said Harrington. "I'm just thankful for everybody who helped us on this journey."
The title also came despite the deduction of a team point early Friday.
