SECTION IV FLAG FOOTBALL: OLMSTED, BELLES LEAD WAVERLY IN 27-6 WIN OVER CHENANGO VALLEY (March 27, 2026)
Valley Sports ReportBINGHAMTON — Junior Makenzie Olmsted scored two TDs — one rushing and one receiving — to help Waverly to a 26-6 win over Chenango Valley in Section IV flag football action here on a cold Friday afternoon.
"I am really happy for the girls," said Waverly coach David Shaw. "I thought we played well tonight. We continue to see things we are working on in practice show up.
"With a few of our starters on the school trip, we were really happy to see our young girls who got an opportunity step up and play very well.
"It was a total team effort," noted Shaw. "I love to see girls taking advantage of opportunities, which is something we talk about a lot — next girl up.
"We are off to a good start, but we still have a bunch of things to clean up," added Shaw. "We will get back to work ... we have a big week ahead with Corning, (Chenango) Forks and Henninger."
Waverly took a 6-0 lead late in the first quarter on a 1-yard TD run by senior QB Brilynn Belles.
The Wolverines took a 12-0 lead into the halftime locker room, thanks to a 10-yard TD pass from Belles to Olmsted with 28 seconds remaining in the second quarter.
Waverly extended its lead to 19-0 early in the third quarter on a 10-yard TD run by senior Avalynn Boots. Belles connected with senior Lizzie Robinson on the conversion.
After CV broke up the shutout early in the fourth quarter, Olmsted broke loose on a 53-yard TD run with 1:23 left in the contest.
Waverly rushed for 154 yards on 21 carries in the win. Olmsted paced the ground game with 99 yards and one TD on eight carries, while Boots added 24 yards and one TD on four carries.
Belles completed nine of 20 pass attempts for 80 yards and one TD, with one interception.
Junior Lecksie Douglass led Waverly's receivers with four catches for 29 yards, while sophomore Maci Wheeler had two grabs for 23 yards, Robinson had one catch for 15 yards, and Olmsted had two receptions for 13 yards and one TD.
Wheeler led Waverly with five flag pulls, including a QB sack, and a tackle-for-loss, while junior Divinity Fisher had four flag pulls and one interception, Belles had three pulls and one interception, and senior Claire Clonch and Olmsted had three pulls and one pass deflection.
Freshman Gianna Rylott added a QB sack in the win, while Douglas had a tackle-for-loss and a pass deflection.
Waverly, now 2-0, returns to action Wednesday at Corning.
