SECTION IV FLAG FOOTBALL: BELLES POWERS WAVERLY IN 31-6 WIN OVER NORWICH (April 17, 2026)
Valley Sports ReportNORWICH — Senior Brilynn Belles accounted for four TDs — two passing, one rushing, and one 'pick-6' — to lead Waverly to a 31-6 win over Norwich here Friday night in Section IV flag football action.
"Again, the girls played well," said Waverly coach David Shaw. "They continue to competem and as a staff we are proud of their efforts.
"Norwich is very athletic and their QB is dynamic," he noted. "We thought the girls did a really good job of executing the game plan."
The Wolverines took a 6-0 lead late in the first quarter on a 58-yard TD run by senior Mira Kittle.
Norwich kept the game close until the final two minutes of the first half.
With 1:45 remaining in the second quarter, Belles capped a drive with a 15-yard TD pass to sophomore Lauryn Welles to make it 12-0.
Just 22 seconds later, Belles raced to paydirt on a 46-yard interception return to extend the lead to 18-0 at the half.
Belles connected on a 64-yard TD pass to Avalynn Boots with 4:21 remaining in the third quarter. Belles hit Welles on the conversion to make it 25-0.
Belles added Waverly's final score on a 3-yard TD run with 6:49 left in the game.
Norwich broke up the shutout with a 6-yard TD run with 1:31 remaining.
Belles completed 12 of 20 passes for 186 yards, and two TDs. She also rushed for 28 yards and one TD on four carries.
Sophomore Maci Wheeler led Waverly with five catches for 44 yards, while senior Lizzie Robinson had three grabs for 18 yards, Welles had two receptions for 40 yards and one TD, Boots had the 64-yard TD catch, and junior Makenzie Olmsted added one catch for 15 yards.
Kittle led Waverly with 98 yards and one TD on eight carries, while Adriana Purvis added 26 yards on four carries, Olmsted chipped in with 20 yards on three carries, and Boots had 12 yards on two carries.
Welles led the Waverly defense with 10 flag pulls, while Kittle had eight, 8th-grader Meeya Wheeler added four pulls, and senior Claire Clonch and freshman Gianna Rylott had three.
Meeya Wheeler, who had a QB sack, and Elli Cole each had an interception.
Waverly, now 7-1, returns to action April 27 when it hosts Elmira.
"We have a week off, so we will go back to work on all the little things and get ready for a very athletic Elmira team," said Shaw.
"We are very excited for the 27th as well," he noted. "We will honor our Small Fry kids and our seniors.
"Our modified team played very well at Sus. Valley Wednesday night, and we are really proud of them," added Shaw. "We are just excited about building a program from the bottom up."
