STAC BASEBALL: TIMELY HITTING, MURRAY'S GEM LIFT WAVERLY TO 4-3 WIN OVER SETON CATHOLIC (April 17, 2026)
Valley Sports ReportBINGHAMTON — Timely hitting and a strong pitching performance from freshman Axel Murray lifted Waverly to a 4-3 win over Seton Catholic here Friday night in STAC Central Division baseball action.
"Tonight, we got big, timely hits from Jack Pipher and Ronin Ault," said Waverly coach Kyle McDuffee.
"And, Axel dominated on the mound," he added. "He had control of his pitches and threw a great complete game."
Murray allowed three runs — all unearned — on three hits over seven innings. He fanned 13 and walked three.
The Wolverines drew first blood in the top of the first inning on back-to-back singles by senior Hogan Shaw and sophomore Jack Pipher to lead off the game, and a one-out sacrifice fly off the bat of junior Matthias Welles to make it 1-0.
Waverly did some two-out damage in the top of the third inning.
Pipher started the scoring with a solo home run to right field to make it 2-0, then senior Ronin Ault singled, stole second, and scored on an RBI single to left field by Welles to extend the lead to 3-0.
The Saints took advantage of a two-out error in the home half of the third to plate a pair of runs and cut the deficit to 3-2.
Another error in the fourth inning cost Waverly a run, and Seton Catholic drew even at 3-3.
In the top of the fifth inning, Hogan Shaw stroked a one-out single up the middle, then stole second and third base, before scoring on a two-out RBI double by Ault to make it 4-3.
The Saints threatened in the bottom of the sixth inning on a lead-off double by Brian Dempsey and another error to put runners on first and third, but a groundout, a strikeout and another groundout helped Murray out of the jam.
Murray struck out the side in order in the bottom of the seventh inning to preserve the win.
Pipher homered and singled, scored one run, and drove in one run, while Ault doubled and singled, stole two bases, scored one run, and knocked in one run, Hogan Shaw singled twice, stole three bases, and scored two runs to pace Waverly's eight-hit attack.
Welles singled and had two RBI, and sophomore Sammy Cheresnowsky added a single in the win.
Waverly, now 5-0, returns to action Saturday at Vestal in a noon start.
