Valley Sports ReportWAVERLY — Waverly poured 13 runs across the plate in its final two at-bats to finish off a come-from-behind, 16-4, six-inning win over Chenango Valley here Wednesday afternoon in STAC Central Division softball action.
"I am very proud of our team tonight," said Waverly coach Brent Doane.
"Coming back from four runs down, we really showed our resilience," Doane noted. "We never let down, stayed together and stayed the course.
"(Taylin) Gonzalez was terrific tonight, her best outing really," he said. "She only allowed two hits and no earned runs, and had eight Ks.
"She stayed hot with another home run, too," added Doane. "Our offense has really come together these last two games."
The Warriors took advantage of Waverly miscues to score one run in the top of the second inning, and three more in the third to take a 4-0 lead.
The Wolverine rally began with two outs in the bottom of the third inning. Junior Lecksie Douglas and senior Maddie Cron ignited the rally with back-to-back singles, then freshman Taylin Gonzalez, junior Hannah Carpenter, and 8th-grader Paige Bubniak stroked consecutive RBI singles to close the gap to 4-3.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Gonzalez and Carpenter bashed back-to-back doubles to tie the game at 4-4.
After Bubniak was hit by a pitch, and the runners advanced on a wild pitch, senior Delaney Wheeler stroked a two-run single to right field to make it 6-4.
Later in the inning, Douglas cleared the bases with a three-run triple and scored on an error on the play to push the lead to 10-4.
Gonzalez, who belted a pair of homers Tuesday at Chenango Valley, capped the scoring in the fifth inning with a solo home run to right field to make it 11-4.
After Gonzalez retired the Warriors in order in the top of the sixth inning, the Wolverines ended the game via the 12-run "mercy rule" with five runs in the home half of the inning.
The rally featured an RBI single by Cron, and the game ended on a two-RBI single by Carpenter.
Douglas was 4-for-4 with a triple, three runs scored, and three RBI to pace Waverly's 17-hit attack, while Gonzalez had three hits, including a home run and a double, three runs scored, and three RBI, and Carpenter had three hits, including a double, one run scored and four RBI.
Cron singled twice, scored two runs, and had one RBI in the win, while Bubniak doubled and singled, scored two runs, and drove in one run, Delaney Wheeler singled, scored one run, and had two RBI, and Emma Williams and freshman Ayla Wheeler each singled, and scored two runs.
Gonzalez earned the win, allowing four runs — all unearned — on two hits, while striking out eight and walking three.
