STAC BASEBALL: STATE-RANKED WAVERLY TOPS CHENANGO VALLEY, 4-1 (April 22, 2026)
Valley Sports ReportBINGHAMTON — Freshman Axel Murray tossed a three-hitter to lead state-ranked Waverly to a 4-1 win over Chenango Valley here Wednesday afternoon in STAC Central Division baseball action.
"Axel (Murray) threw a gem tonight," said Waverly coach Kyle McDuffee. "No earned runs and just lived around strike zone.
"He is just a very strong competitor.
"We manufactured runs tonight late in the game, thanks to solid base-running and pressing Valley to make plays in big spot," added McDuffee.
The Wolverines, ranked sixth in the state in Class A, took a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on back-to-back one-out doubles by sophomore Jack Pipher and senior Ronin Ault.
Waverly added a run to its lead in the top of the fifth inning when Pipher was hit by a pitch with one out, stole second, and scored on a groundball RBI-single by Ault to make it 2-0.
CV closed the gap back to one run, at 2-1, with a run on a two-out error in the bottom of the fifth inning, but Waverly answered with two insurance runs in the sixth inning.
Junior Justin Koenig walked to lead off the sixth, stole second, and scored on a one-out RBI single to right field by Murray, who stole second and scored on an error to make it 4-1.
Murray earned the win, allowing an unearned run on three hits, while striking out 10 and walking three in seven innings of work.
Ault doubled and singled and drove in two runs, and Pipher singled and scored two runs to pace Waverly's five-hit attack, while Murray singled, scored one run, and knocked in one run, senior Daltton Davis added a single, and Koenig scored one run.
Waverly, now 8-0, hosts Chenango Valley Friday to wrap up its three-game series.
