STAC SOFTBALL: WAVERLY SCORES TWICE IN SEVENTH TO RALLY FOR 4-3 WIN AT FORKS (April 30, 2026)

Valley Sports Report
BINGHAMTON — Waverly scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to rally for a 4-3 win over Chenango Forks here Thursday afternoon in STAC Central Division softball action.

"We had to have some late-game heroics tonight," said Waverly coach Brent Doane.

"Our defense really let us down," he noted. "We missed a ground ball and missed a thrown ball and it cost us two runs.

"And, our offense really struggled," added Doane. "I give their pitcher credit, she figured out the strike zone and controlled us at the plate."

Trailing 3-2 after six innings, 8th-grader Paige Bubniak worked a walk to lead off the top of the seventh inning.

Bubniak took second on a groundout off the bat of senior Maddie Cron, then stole third base, before scoring the tying run on an RBI double by freshman Taylin Gonzalez.

After stealing third base, Gonzalez scored on a groundout off the bat of junior Hannah Carpenter to give the Wolverines a 4-3 lead.

Gonzalez pitched around a lead-off walk in the home half of the seventh, aided by a pair of strikeouts to preserve the win.

Waverly took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning on an outfield error.

Bubniak ignited the rally with a one-out single, and Cron followed with a double to put runners on second and third. Three pitches later, Gonzalez launched a fly ball to right field that was misplayed, allowing both runners to score.

CV answered with a run in the bottom of the third, and scored two more in the fifth inning to take a 3-2 lead.

Gonzalez doubled, scored one run, and drove in one run, and Cron doubled and scored a run to pace Waverly's five-hit attack, while Bubniak singled, stole two bases, and scored two runs, Carpenter singled, stole two bases, and drove in one run, and junior Lecksie Douglas added a single.

Gonzalez earned the win in the pitcher's circle for the Wolverines. She allowed three runs — two earned — on six hits, while fanning 14 and walking six.

Waverly, now 6-4, returns to action Friday when it hosts Ithaca.
