STAC SOFTBALL: WAVERLY TOPS FORKS, 6-2, FOR SIXTH STRAIGHT WIN (May 6, 2026)
Valley Sports ReportWAVERLY — Freshman Taylin Gonzalez belted a first-inning home run and pitched a complete-game to lead Waverly in a 6-2 win over Chenango Forks on "Senior Night" here Wednesday afternoon in STAC Central Division softball action.
"It's a great win for us tonight, a great win for our seniors," said Waverly coach Brent Doane.
"(Taylin) Gonzalez really cruised tonight in the circle, striking out 12 and only walking two,"noted Doane. "She is really finding her groove now.
"She is also seeing the ball incredibly well on offense.
"Mel Skovira had a great night at the plate going 3-for-4," said Doane. "The lower half for our order really did a nice job collecting seven of our 13 hits tonight.
"It was a good effort all the way around," added Doane.
After the Blue Devils scored a run in the top of the first inning, the Wolverines answered with four runs in the home half of the frame.
With one out, senior Maddie Cron worked a walk, and Gonzalez cranked a 1-2 pitch over the center-field fence to give Waverly a 2-1 lead.
With two outs, junior Lecksie Douglas re-ignited the rally with a single, then stole second base, and scored on a line-drive single into center field by senior Delaney Wheeler to make it 3-1.
After a walk to freshman Ayla Wheeler, sophomore Melanie Skovira hit an RBI grounder up the middle to cap the rally.
Forks got one run back in the top of the fourth inning to close the gap to 4-2, but Waverly had an immediate answer with a run in the home half of the inning — on singles by Ayla Wheeler, Skovira, and 8th-grader Paige Bubniak — to make it 5-2.
Cron's RBI double in the bottom of the fifth inning to provide the final margin.
Gonzalez allowed two runs on six hits, while striking out 12 and walking two in seven innings to earn the win in the pitcher's circle.
Skovira stroked three singles and drove in one run to pace Waverly's 14-hit attack, while Gonzalez homered and singled, scored one run, and drove in two runs, Delaney Wheeler singled twice, scored one run, and knocked in one run, and Douglas singled twice and scored one run.
Cron doubled, scored one run, and drove in one run in the win, while Bubniak singled, scored one run, and knocked in one run, Ayla Wheeler singled and scored one run, and juniors Hannah Carpenter and Kaiya Horton each added a single.
Waverly, now 10-4 and winners of six straight, returns to action Saturday afternoon when it hosts Tioga.
