Valley Sports Report
TIOGA CENTER — Sophomore Cam Ross pitched a rain-shortened complete game to lead Tioga in a division-clinching, 8-1, win over Newfield here Wednesday afternoon in IAC South Small School baseball action.

Tioga, now 7-7, will square off with North Small School champ Union Springs (13-3) Friday at 3 p.m. at Watkins Glen.

"It's always nice to win our division," said Tioga coach Kevin Evanek. "It’s one of our year-end goals we set at the start of each season.

"We’ve had some really good outings lately for some of our pitchers — Cam Ross was outstanding on the mound tonight," noted Evanek. "And, we’re finding ways to score runs.

"We’ll see what happens in the postseason," added Evanek.

Newfield took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a passed ball, but Tioga answered.

With one out in the bottom of the first inning, Anthony Powell singled up the middle, then junior Cooper Dember and senior Max Paugh worked walks to load the bases.

Ross lined an RBI single into left field to tie the game at 1-1, but the next two batters were retired.

Sophomore Josh Rought stroked a two-out single in the second inning, stole second, and scored on an error to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead.

The Tigers scored three unearned runs in the third inning in a rally that featured an RBI single by junior Brayden Lounsbury to extend the lead to 5-1.

Tioga loaded the bases with two outs in the fourth inning, then scored when Lounsbury was hit by a pitch to force home a run, and junior Brendan Clark reached base on a dropped third strike to make it 7-1.

The Tigers added an unearned run in the home half of the fifth inning.

Ross singled twice, scored two runs, and drove in one run to pace Tioga's five-hit attack, while Lounsbury singled, scored one run, and drove in two runs, Rought singled and scored two runs, Powell singled and scored one run, and Paugh scored two runs.

Ross allowed an unearned run on one hit, while striking out 10 and walking three in five innings of work.
