STAC SOFTBALL: WAVERLY FALLS TO CORNING IN CONFERENCE SEMI (May 16, 2026)
Valley Sports Report
BINGHAMTON — The Waverly softball team ran into the same problem several other teams have encountered — trying to score against Corning.
The Hawks picked up their seventh shutout of the season, defeating the Wolverines, 7-0, in the STAC semifinals held at Greenlight Networks Grand Slam Park here Saturday.
It was the fourth of five consecutive shutouts for the state’s top-ranked Class AAA team, which went on to blank Vestal, 6-0, in the championship game.
Emilia Smith allowed just five base runners and struck out 10 as Corning improved to 16-0 on the season.
The Wolverines held their own through the first three innings keeping the game scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning.
Sophie Schoonover, Smith and Hannah Kauffman delivered consecutive singles to load the bases, then Keana Mann and Katie Grover added one-out back-to-back singles as Corning built a 4-0 advantage.
A single by Lauren DeRosa and an error off the bat of Schoonover made it 5-0 in the fifth.
Keira Brass and Matti Johnston connected for consecutive singles in the sixth, and DeRosa belted a two-run single to right to push the Hawks’ lead to 7-0.
Tylin Gonzalez connected for Waverly’s first hit of the game with two away in the first, Delaney Wheeler added a base hit in the second and Maddie Cron accounted for the team’s final hit in the third.
Cron and Gonzalez would reach base via one-out walks in the sixth, but Corning turned a double play to avoid any damage.
Waverly is seeded second for the Section IV Class A playoffs and receives a bye in the first round. The Wolverines host the winner of Chenango Valley and Oneonta on May 27.
