VALLEY SPORTS REPORT: ATHENS' BURGESS, WANCK, SAYRE'S GREEN NAMED BISHOP BROTHERS CONSTRUCTION 'ATHLETES OF THE WEEK' (May 20, 2026)

THE VALLEY — Athens senior Abby Burgess and junior Graham Wanck punched their tickets to the PIAA, Class AAA Track & Field Championships, and Sayre senior Karter Green wrapped up his career with a pitching gem. They are the VSR / Bishop Brothers Construction "Athletes of the Week," for the week ending May 16.

ATHENS' BURGESS NAMED BISHOP BROTHERS CONSTRUCTION GIRLS "ATHLETE OF THE WEEK"
Burgess is headed back to States for the third year in a row after a second-place finish in the 100-meter dash at the District 4, Class 3A Championships.

She finished second in the 200-meter dash in a time of 26.21, missing the state cut time by less than one second.

Honorable Mention: Athens' Alissa Vough (track & field), Athens' Evelyn Panek (track & field), Athens' Elizabeth Denlinger (track & field), Waverly's Taylin Gonzalez (softball), Waverly's Hannah Carpenter (softball), Tioga's Vida Rossi (track & field), Athens' Gretchan Hiley (softball), Athens' Maddie Hiley (softball), Sayre's Olivia Thompson (softball), Sayre's Rylee Lantz (softball), Waverly's Lecksie Douglas (softball), Waverly's Paige Bubniak (softball), and Waverly's Kaylin Twedt (track & field).

ATHENS' WANCK, SAYRE'S GREEN NAMED BISHOP BROTHERS CONSTRUCTION BOYS "ATHLETES OF THE WEEK"
Wanck will make his first trip to States after winning the District 4, Class 3A title in the 1,600-meter run in a  time of 4:27.07 — besting the runner-up by more than three seconds.

Wanck placed second in the 3,200-meter dash.

Green struck out 16 and walked three, while allowing three hits in 6 2/3 innings in a 2-1 win over Sullivan County.

At the plate, Green was 1-for-3 with an RBI.
