ATHENS — Athens scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning, and cruised to an 11-1 four-inning win over Wellsboro here Thursday afternoon in the opening round of bracket play in the District 15 Majors Division softball playoffs.

Athens added a pair of runs in the second inning to take a 7-0 lead, then scored once in the third inning to make it 8-1, and closed out the game with three runs to invoke the 10-run "mercy rule."

Sophia Barrett had three hits, including a pair of triples, scored three runs, and drove in one run to pace Athens' 12-hit attack, while Teriana Orshal doubled twice, scored one run, and had two RBI, and Sadie Wanck tripled and singled, scored two runs, and knocked in one run.

Hadley Liechty doubled, scored two runs, and drove in one run in the win, while Lindsey Ahern singled, scored two runs, and knocked in one run, Molly McGrath doubled and drove in one run, Nora Morales singled and knocked in one run, and Cece Shangraw singled and scored one run.

McGrath started in the pitcher's circle for Athens, allowing one hit and striking out five in two scoreless innings.

Morales earned the win in relief, allowing one unearned run on three hits, with one strikeout and no walks.

Athens returns to action Monday when it hosts Southern Tioga.
