SECTION 3 LITTLE LEAGUE (SOFTBALL): SELINSGROVE HOLDS OFF ATHENS TO WIN SECTION 3 TITLE (24 PHOTOS) (July 4, 2026)
Valley Sports ReportSOUTH WILLIAMSPORT — Athens twice fought back from three runs down, but a third rally was not in the cards as Selinsgrove pulled out a 7-6 win here Saturday afternoon to win the Section 3 Little League Softball Majors Division Majors Division championship.
The game was the third between the two teams this week in the double-elimination tournament.
Athens won the winner's bracket finals Wednesday, 7-6, but after beating Montoursville in the consolation bracket finals, Selinsgrove forced a winner-take-all third game with a 12-1 win Friday night.
On Saturday, Selinsgrove took a quick 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning.
Athens answered with two runs in the top of the second, but Selinsgrove countered with two runs of its own to take a 3-2 lead into the third inning.
Athens plated a run in the top of the fourth inning to tie the game at 3-3, but Selinsgrove scored three runs with two outs in the bottom of the inning to take a 6-3 lead.
Athens answered with three runs in the top of the fifth inning — all with two outs — to tie the game at 6-6. Hadley Liechty's RBI single to center field plated Sophia Barrett to tie the game.
Selinsgrove took advantage of two Athens errors in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 7-6 lead, then pitched around a two-out walk in the top of the seventh inning to preserve the win.
Livia Powers singled and scored two runs, and Lindsay Ahern doubled and scored one run to pace Athens' four-hit attack, while Cece Shangraw singled and scored one run, and Liechty singled and drove in one run.
Barrett and Khloe Butcher each scored one run for Athens.
Molly McGrath pitched for Athens, allowing four earned runs on four hits, while striking out five and walking four in five innings.
Selinsgrove now advances to the State tournament.
