7-v-7 FOOTBALL: WAVERLY WINS SILVER BRACKET AT N.Y. STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS (July 13, 2026)
Valley Sports ReportCORTLAND — Waverly won the Silver Bracket in the Small School Division at the New York State Coaches Association 7-v-7 Championships here at SUNY Cortland.
"They did a little bit differently to reduce the amount of games," said Waverly coach Jason Miller.
"They created two brackets after pool play,"he noted.
"I thought our bracket was tough," he said. "We had New Hartford, Maine-Endwell, and Bishop Ludden.
"They were all pretty athletic," noted Miller. "We got into that bracket and just rolled right through it."
Miller also noted the changes were made at the request of the New York Giants, who sponsored the tournament.
Miller pointed out the play of several players.
"Cartyr and Cooper Christie played really well," said Miller. "And Chase Wheeler and Sammy Cheresnowsky played well.
"We just played solid defense," he noted. "We did a really good job other than we played Monroe in pool play and got our ass kicked.
"This was our third tournament this summer," said Miller "We've been to Buffalo University, and played some really good competition up there.
"We went to Lehigh University, played some really good New Jersey, Virginia, Pennsylvania competition.
"It was nice to get back in New York for a tournament," he noted. "We've been working with Athens a little bit, and I'm looking to get some other teams throughout the summer, but summer is going fast."
Miller also gave a thanks to the Waverly Sports Complex for another generation to the Quarterback Club.
"We spent a lot of money throughout the summer," said Miller. "Going to camps, going to tournaments, and staying over hotels, so it assists with all that.
"The kids definitely benefit from everything they do for us," said Miller, who noted the Waverly Sports Complex also made a donation to the Waverly Flag Football team.
