IAC GIRLS SOCCER: TIOGA FALLS TO MARATHON, 1-0, IN SEASON-OPENER (September 1, 2026)

TIOGA CENTER — Paityn Contri came off the bench to score the game's only goal midway through the first half to lift Marathon to a season-opening, 1-0, win over Tioga here Tuesday afternoon in IAC Small School girls soccer action at Haggerty Field.

"A disappointing season-opening loss," said interim Tioga coach Jim Walsh. 

"Marathon was an improved team from last year, and we were a little disjointed today and couldn’t generate much offense, especially in the first half," he noted.

"We did make a second-half adjustment and it helped offensively, but it wasn’t enough. 

"We were definitely tired from (Monday's) four-team scrimmage with Horseheads, Waverly, and SVEC, and the very humid weather," added Walsh.

Contri's goal came with 18:40 remaining in the first half, and the Olympians' defense made it stand over the final 58 minutes, and 40 seconds to pull out the win.

Marathon had a 13-4 advantage in shots-on-goal, and a 5-1 edge in corner kicks.

Senior Marcy Moniz recorded 15 saves in net for the Tigers.

Tioga returns to action Thursday at Southern Cayuga.
