STAC GIRLS SOCCER: WAVERLY DROPS 3-2 DECISION AT ONEONTA (September 3, 2026)

WAVERLY — Oneonta scored three second-half goals to erase Waverly's 1-0 halftime lead on its way to a 3-2 win here Thursday in STAC girls soccer action.

"We were off to a decent start, but it was another game of losing site of possession," said Waverly coach Tara Hogan. "We had opportunities that we just didn't capitalize on when we absolutely should have.

"Oneonta was a very physical team," noted Hogan. "We were getting moved off the ball often." 

Junior Gianna Soprano, off a feed from junior Lilliana Schooner, scored from outside the box about 10 minutes into the game to give the Wolverines a 1-0 lead.

Waverly held the one-goal lead for nearly 50 minutes until the Yellowjackets tied the game with 22:45 remaining on a by Nora Sander.

Cassidy Howard gave Oneonta a 2-1 lead with 11:46 remaining, then scored again with 2:32 left to make it 3-1.

Senior Ryleigh Judson rifled a long shot into the upper-90 with 52 seconds remaining to provide the final margin.

"Ryleigh Judson's goal was phenomenal and brought some life back to the field," said Hogan.

Waverly had a 14-12 edge in shots-on-goal, while Oneonta had a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Sophomore Taylin Gonzalez recorded six saves in net for the Wolverines, and freshman Carson LaFrance added five.

"Makenzie Olmsted was being run ragged as Oneonta continued to try and play down our line," said Hogan. "And, Melanie Skovira really stepped up today and made some great plays."

Waverly, now 1-1, returns to action this weekend, playing Aquinas Institute Saturday, and South Glens Falls Sunday as part of the New York State Hall of Fame Tournament.

We have a busy weekend coming up as we head to the New York State Hall of Fame tournament," said Hogan. "We need to focus on recovery and playing as a unit."
