ON TAP FOOTBALL: WAVERLY FOOTBALL OPENS AT HOME; ATHENS-TROY GIRLS IN EARLY-SEASON CLASH (September 5, 2026)
Valley Sports ReportTHE VALLEY — Waverly football opens the 2026 season at home this evening against Port Jervis in a battle of Section runners-up, while the Athens girls play a key early-season match at Troy.
FOOTBALL
Port Jervis at Waverly, 6 p.m.: The Wolverines' 9-2 season last year came to an end with a 27-7 loss to Owego in the Section IV, Class B championship game, while the Red Raiders saw their 9-2 end with a 22-21 loss to Saugerties in the Section IX, Class B title tilt.
Waverly, back in Class C this year, finished last season ranked 11th in Class B, while Port Jervis was 16th.
The Red Raiders averaged 47 points per game last season, and scored 55 or more points six times in 2025, including a 77-point outburst against Red Hook.
Waverly outscored its opponents by an average of 24-6 to 15.5 in 2025, and posted a 5-1 record at home.
GIRLS SOCCER
Athens (1-0) at Troy (1-2), 4 p.m.: The Wildcats are coming off a season-opening 1-0 win over NEB, while the Trojans snapped an early-season two-game skid with an 8-1 win over Williamson.
Troy lost its first two games of the season to Loyalsock by a score of 3-0, and Muncy, 2-0.
