STAC GIRLS SOCCER: WAVERLY BOUNCES BACK TO BLANK SOUTH GLENS FALLS, 3-0, AT HALL OF FAME SHOWCASE (September 6, 2026)

ILION, N.Y. — Freshman Kezlynn DeKay scored her first varsity goal a little more than four minutes into the game to spark Waverly in a 3-0 win over South Glens Falls here Sunday at the Hall of Fame Showcase.

It was a big bounce-back for the Wolverines, who were blanked, 8-0, by Rochester's Aquinas Institute on Saturday.

"After a rough game (Saturday) and a long trip to the game today, Coach VanAllen and I were very happy with today's outcome," said Waverly coach Waverly coach Tara Hogan. 

"The girls played with more composure than we'd yet to see this season," she noted. "They passed well and moved the ball together as a unit.

"We still have new people and veterans playing in various new positions, and we are definitely still learning, but this was a fun game to watch things start to come together," added Hogan.

DeKay chased down a pass from junior Gianna Soprano, outrunning a South Glens Falls defender, then taking on the keeper in a 1-v-1. After colliding with the keeper, DeKay ended up with the ball at her feet, and fired a shot into the empty net to give the Wolverines a 1-0 lead with 35:50 remaining in the first half.

About 10 1/2 minutes later, junior Kaylin Twedt ran down a feed from junior Lilliana Schoonover, and then fired a shot off the keeper's hand and into the net to make it 2-0.

Senior Ryleigh Judson, off a feed from freshman Gabriella Palanza, fired a shot into the upper-90 to provide the final margin.

"Maci (Wheeler) and Gianna (Soprano's) abilities to see those pockets and play those passes are second to none," said Hogan. "And, Ryleigh has had a knack for finding the back of the net toward the end of these last couple games with well-placed shots.  

"Kaylin Twedt has seen ample time on all three lines of the field and has been doing an exceptional job knowing what to do in each position.  

"Kezlynn DeKay is doing a great job being a constant source of pressure on other team's defensive lines," said Hogan. "Another newcomer who is doing very well is Sophia Dorsey.  She has barely left the field as a freshman on our defensive line.

"And, Makenzie does a fantastic job communicating and running our back line," added Hogan.

Waverly had an 18-3 advantage in shots-on-goal, and a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.

Sophomore Taylin Gonzalez recorded one save in net for the Wolverines, and freshman Carson LaFrance had two.

Waverly, now 2-2, returns to action Thursday when it hosts Seton Catholic under the lights at Memorial Stadium.

Aquinas Institute 8, Waverly 0
At Shenendehowa High School,  Aquinas, Class A state finalists last fall, dominated play in an 8-0 win Saturday.

"We were greatly outmatched," said Hogan.

"Our entire team was on defense for the entire game," she noted. "We had very few opportunities to move up the field.  

"Aquinas passed around us and made it very difficult for our players to stay with them," added Hogan. "We tried our best to stay with them and limit their opportunities."

Aquinas led 3-0 at the half, then put the game away with five second-half goals.

Aquinas outshot Waverly, 32-2, and had an 8-1 edge in corner kicks.

Gonzalez recorded eight saves in net, and LaFrance had 18.
