NTL BOYS SOCCER: UMBER'S EARLY-SEASON SCORING SPREE CONTINUES IN ATHENS' 10-0 WIN OVER TROY (24 PHOTOS) (September 8, 2026)
Valley Sports ReportATHENS — Junior Patrick Umber netted his second hat trick in as many games to lead Athens to a 10-0 win over Troy here Tuesday afternoon in NTL boys soccer action.
"It was another successful game for this group of boys," said Athens coach Travis Reynard.
"Troy did give us some frustrations early on with their packed defending and we got anxious and played way to slow as a team," he noted.
"The second half was a completely different story and we looked like a complete unit on both sides of the ball, which was great to see," added Reynard.
Umber's hat trick gives him nine goals in Athens' 3-0 start.
Sophomore Caden Brennan scored two goals and dished out three assists, while sophomore Chase Gombocz scored twice and doled out two assists, and freshman Bryce Gombocz had one goal and one assist.
Freshman Nico Rossettie and sophomore Hudson Yale each added one goal for the Wildcats.
"Offensively, it was another game where we lit up the scoreboard," said Reynard. "We connected well and capitalized on most our chances, but there’s still more to do.
"We need to execute on as many chances as possible and not waste promising attacks like we did tonight early on.
"We have to play a complete 80 minutes in solid attacking shape," added Reynard.
Chase Gombocz, off a feed from Caden Brennan, scored to give Athens a 1-0 lead about 2 1/2 minutes into the game.
The Wildcats maintained the one-goal advantage until Umber scored on a penalty kick with 25 minutes remaining in the half.
Caden Brennan, off a cross from Chase Gombocz, made it 3-0 with 9:19 left in the half, then scored again, off a feed from Bryce Gombocz, in the final minute to send the Wildcats into the halftime intermission up 4-0.

Umber scored consecutive goals — the first off an assist from Chase Gombocz, and second from Bryce Gombocz, to extend the lead to 7-0 with 18:56 remaining in the contest.
Bryce Gombocz, Nico Rossetti, and Hudson Yale scored goals in the final 16 minutes to provide the final margin.
Athens had a 21-1 advantage in shots-on-goal, and a 9-0 edge in corner kicks.
"Defensively, it was sloppy all around the field early on," said Reynard. "We were on our heels for a while and struggled to get a rhythm going, but quickly turned it around and shut down all attacks quickly from Troy.
"We defended as a team and the back line was able to connect and build out of the back to spark promising attacks, which was a major improvement from prior games," added Reynard.
Athens, now 3-0, travels to Towanda Thursday.
