NORWICH — Norwich kept constant pressure on Waverly on its way to a 6-0 here Wednesday night in STAC boys soccer action.

"It was a tough match for us tonight," said Waverly coach Jon Rankin. "We are fighting nagging injuries from key players and finding meaningful connections made tonight difficult.

"We had some real chances," he noted. "I give props to my offense. They were able to work the ball and find some chances, unfortunately, none that made it to the back of the net. 

"We have a split decision to choose between an extra touch, a power or finesse shot, or even a pass. I believe we are making better decisions every game and moving more and more like a unit. 

"Our defense played well also," said Rankin. "They got us out of some sticky situations early and contributed to play tough throughout the rest of the match. 

"James Cole was clutch on some big saves. There were a lot of moments where he was left with tough decisions and he denied their offense. 

"We are a young and raw team and have more work to do, plain and simple," added Rankin. "We return to play Friday against Windsor. I am confident the boys can turn this season around and be competitive.

Jay Conant scored twice for the Purple Tornado, and Andrew Mirabito added a goal on a penalty kick.

James Sprague, Joseph Monaco, and Wyeth Stafford also scored for Norwich.

Norwich had a 9-4 edge in shots-on-goal.

Waverly, now 0-5, hosts Windsor Friday at 5 p.m. on the high school field.
