NTL VOLLEYBALL: ATHENS CAN'T OVERCOME SLOW START IN 3-0 LOSS TO WELLSBORO (12 PHOTOS) (September 17, 2026)

WELLSBORO — Athens started out slow and never recovered in a 3-0 loss to Wellsboro here Thursday night in NTL Large School volleyball action.

The Hornets won by scores of 25-19, 25-22, and 25-17.

"We started out tight tonight, and Wellsboro came out hot and fired up," said Athens coach Heather Darrow. "By the time we realized we could play with them, it was too late.

"We definitely fought back, we did have energy, we had some nice plays, solid hits,  we just had some unforced errors that put us in a spot to play catch up constantly.

"I thought Ev Roy really stepped up and did great all around; the girl has a hammer," noted Darrow. "Kayla Forbes had some great coverage on her hitters and serve-receive passing.
 
"Last year was a rough game for Lainey Vosburgh and I am so proud of her this year for the control she showed in serve-receive and defense," said Darrow. "Emi McQuay and Kendall Gallasso had some solid blocks and moved the blockers around.
 
"One of the 8000 things I love about this team is how coachable they are. I had Hannah Parrish make a few adjustments on defense and she got herself several digs. 

"Meg Wiles started mixing up the offense which really helped us get better shots. She really had some smart sets," said Darrow. "Ellie Mosher had her massive swings and smart shots, she just didn't find the court a few times, but it's so awesome having a hitter like her who is trying for different spots. She's being fearless trying some different things. It will come. 

"Wellsboro is good and so are we," added Hanson. "I know we all are looking forward to playing them again."

Sophomore Kayla Forbes led Athens with seven points and 12 digs, while junior Lainey Vosburgh had five points and nine digs, senior Meg Wiles had four points and 24 setter assists, and senior Hannah Parrish had two points and 12 digs.

Freshman Evelyn Roy registered 10 digs, nine kills and one block for the Wildcats, while junior Ellie Mosher had five kills and five digs, freshman Emi McQuay recorded five kills, one block, and three digs, and junior Kendall Galasso added two points and four kills.

Athens, now 4-2, returns to action Tuesday when it hosts Cowanesque Valley.
