Valley Sports ReportTIOGA CENTER — Groton scored midway through the first half, and made it stand in a 1-0 win over Groton in IAC girls soccer crossover action here Saturday morning at Haggerty Field.
"It was a hard-fought game both sides, and a tale of two halves," said interim Tioga coach Jim Walsh. "Groton came out firing in the first half, while we were flat footed and had a 7-3 shot advantage. It was a different story in the second half, with a 6-3 shot advantage in our favor.
"Northside IAC schools, particularly Groton and Southern Cayuga, historically have been Tioga’s nemesis, and today was no different," noted Walsh.
"One key factor is the large number of players they carry, he said. "Us having just 12 players and a few getting banged up during the game made things a little more challenging, but I will say our girls are tough' they don’t go down easily.
Truth Snyder put Groton on the board with 19:05 remaining in the first half, and both defenses were impenetrable over the final 59:05 of the match.
Groton had an 11-9 edge in shots-on-goal, and a 2-1 edge in corner kicks.
Senior Marcy Moniz recorded eight saves in net for the Tigers.
Tioga, now 3-3, returns to action Monday at SVEC.
