STAC BOYS SOCCER: WAVERLY AVENGES EARLY-SEASON LOSS; TOPS JC, 3-1 (September 28, 2026)

JOHNSON CITY — Waverly had three different players find the net in avenging an early-season loss Johnson City here Monday evening with a 3-1 win in STAC Central Division boys soccer action.

The win avenges Waverly's 2-0 loss to JC on Sept. 8.

"The boys played very well tonight," said Waverly coach Jon Rankin. "We were able to put the pieces together and capitalize on some big opportunities. 

"We had many more, we just came up short," he added.

Freshman Lucian Krause, off an assist from senior Collin Wheeler, scored the only goal of the first half to help the Wolverines to a 1-0 lead at the halftime intermission.

Junior Hayden Roskow and sophomore Aiden Malorzo added goals for the Wolverines in the second.

Johnson City scored in the final four minutes to avoid the cutout.

"The defense and our attack came in big tonight with unrelenting pressure and forcing big decisions from the other team," said Rankin. "Collin Wheeler and Trent VanDyke played our center-backs and did a phenomenal job doing so. 

"The pairing of Lucian Krause and Cohen Kraft did us wonders being able to more the ball out of pressure and redistribute the ball," he noted. "They’re two very talented players and they play their roles well for the team. 

"The conditions were tough given the rain that had occurred during warmup and most of the first half leading to a very unruly touch and skip off the ground," said Rankin. "These two have such good ball control it made possessing and building out of the middle third easier for us."

Rankin said the Wolverines were able to overcome injuries sustained Saturday in a 7-0 loss the Chenango Forks.

"Due to some injury we sustained against Forks, we had to change up some roles and some of the starting line," said Rankin. 

"It was nerve-wracking at first, however, the boys stepped up to the challenge and I’m proud of them," he noted. "We talk a lot o about being the next man up to start, sub, or move to a new position to help the team. 

"They adapted very well and lead us to a total team win tonight." added Rankin.

JC had a 9-6 advantage in shots-on-goal.

Junior James Cole recorded eight saves in net for the Wolverines.

Waverly returns to action Wednesday when it host Owego.
