Valley Sports ReportWAVERLY — Jake Dalla Verde scored seven goals to lead Seton Catholic to an 8-1 win over Waverly here Tuesday night in STAC Central Division boys soccer action.
Despite the lopsided score, Waverly coach Jon Rankin was pleased with his team's performance against the division-leading Saints.
"We played a phenomenal game tonight," he said. "I am extremely proud of my guys.
"There were four yellow cards and one red for the other team and one yellow for ours," noted Rankin. "It was a very physical and tough game from the first to last minute.
"Our pace, touches, areal contests and passes have been getting better every match. A big focus during our trainings are pace of play, areal contests and connecting passes," he said. "We put together several offensive chances tonight, more so than we’ve had for a majority of the season.
Props to Lucian Krause, Ian Johnston, and Seamus Keeley in the midfield continuing to deny the other team opportunities and service our team with chances," added Rankin. "For being freshman, they play like veterans."
Will Waser opened the scoring for the Saints about six minutes into the game, and Dalla Verde added three goals before the intermission to make it 4-0.
Dalla Verde scored three more goals in a 10-minute span early in the first half to extend the lead to 7-0,
Sophomore Cohen Kraft scored on a penalty kick with 15:49 remaining in the contest.
"Cohen Kraft earned us a penalty kick after being slide tackled from behind," said Rankin. "He was able to find the back of the net and give some momentum for the match."
Dalla Verde scored with 10 minutes remaining in the contest to provide the final margin.
Waverly, now 2-10, returns to action Saturday when it hosts Chenango Valley on the high school field.
