TIOGA CENTER — Grace Howey netted a hat trick to lead Tioga to a 4-1 win over Newfield here Tuesday night in IAC South Small School Division girls soccer action at Haggerty Field.

The Tigers close out the regular season Tuesday when they host Newark Valley. With a win, Tioga will force a playoff game against O-M for the division title. The playoff is tentatively set for Oct. 15 at Tioga.

"Tonight was just a solid all-around performance by the girls," said Tioga's interim coach Jim Walsh.

"Tioga's tenacious and tough defender Amelia Toomey pretty much shut down Newfield's best forward, Sophia Reed, the entire game," noted Walsh.

"Fellow defenders Kaylah Nelson and Serenity Relyea helped anchor the defense, all helping to hold the Trojans to a mere four shots-on-goal," added Walsh.

Howey opened the scoring about 11 1/2 minutes into the game, then scored again with 16:52 remaining in the half to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.

Sophia Reed put Newfield on the board about a minute later, and Tioga led 2-1 at the intermission.

Howey completed her hat trick about 5 1/2 minutes into the second half.

Natalie Kemp scored with 8:54 remaining in the contest to provide the final margin.

Tioga had a 28-14 advantage in shots-on-goal, and an 8-2 edge in corner kicks.

Senior Marcy Moniz recorded four saves in net for the Trojans.
