FROM THE PRESS BOX: THREE VALLEY TEAMS FACE TOUGH TESTS IN WEEK 7 (October 8, 2026)

Week 7 of the high school football season is upon us,, and things get a little tougher for three of the Valley teams this week.

The last three weeks has seen the four Valley teams combined for a 10-2 record, but this week the only near-certainty is an Athens win as Waverly travels to take on unbeaten Johnson City, Tioga is on the road against a good Schuyler team, and Sayre hosts a very good Montgomery team.

Last week was another very good week for the VSR Pigskin Prognositcators. Little Red 10-0 and I were 10-0, while The Mick and Country Bob were 9-1, and Madden & Summerall was 8-2.

On the season, The Mick and Little Red lead the way at 53-10, while Country Bob and I are both 51-12, and Madden & Summerall is 47-16.

Without further ado, let's see what VSR's Pigskin Prognosticators foresee in Week 7:

Waverly (3-2) at Johnson City (5-0): The Wolverines are coming off a 49-14 divisional win over Norwich, while the Wildcats topped Chenango Valley, 36-27.

Prediction: JC does have a 31-28 win over Owego, which beat Waverly, 35-24, but the Wolverines have played a much tougher schedule. ... WAVERLY 31, JC 26.

North Penn-Mansfield (0-6) at Athens (5-1): The Wildcats are coming off a 44-0 win over Wellsboro, while the Tigers dropped a 48-12 decision to Troy.

Prediction: Athens has overwhelmed the lesser teams in the NTL this season, and this week will be no different. ... ATHENS 44, NP-M 0.
The Mick: Athens 48, NP-M 0. ... Country Bob: Athens 56, NP-M 0. ... Little Red: Athens 49, NP-M 7. ... Madden & Summerall: Athens 38, NP-M 14.

Montgomery (5-1) at Sayre (2-4): The Redskins are coming off a 20-7 loss to Canton, while the Red Raiders crushed Wyalusing, 73-0.

Prediction: First-year coach Guy Kapichok has done a nice job at Sayre, but Montgomery and Line Mountain are the class of Class A. ... MONTGOMERY 55, SAYRE 6.

Tioga (3-2) at Schuyler (4-1): The Tigers are coming off a 37-14 win at Newark Valley, while the Storm thumped previously-unbeaten Groton, 36-8.

Prediction: We'll see where Tioga stacks up in Class D this weekend against a Schuyler team, which dropped down from Class C this year. The Tigers have always fared well against Schuyler's Wing-T offense because of its superiority in the trenches. ... TIOGA 27, SCHUYLER 22.

Wellsboro (1-5) at Towanda (3-3): The Black Knights are coming off a 35-7 win over Cowanesque Valley, while the Hornets dropped a 44-0 decision at Athens.

Prediction: Towanda has beaten the teams it's suppose to beat, and has been a little more competitive against the top NTL teams than Wellsboro. ... TOWANDA 27, WELLSBORO 13.

South (4-2) at Wyalusing (0-6): The Mounties are coming off a 28-6 win over a solid Muncy team, while the Rams were embarrassed in a 73-0 home loss to Montgomery.

Prediction: This is a mismatch on paper and on the field. ... SOUTH 54, WYALUSING 0.

Canton (4-2) at Muncy (3-3): The Warriors are coming off a 20-7 win over Sayre, while the Indians dropped a 28-6 decision  to South Williamsport.

Prediction: Canton has beaten the teams you would expect them to, but the schedule gets tougher starting this week. ... MUNCY 33, CANTON 13.

Cowanesque Valley (2-4) at Troy (5-1): The Trojans are coming off a 48-12 win over North Penn-Mansfield, while the Indians dropped a 35-7 decision at Towanda.

Prediction: Troy's first four games were teams with a combined record of 17-7. Their next five are against teams with a combined 5-25 record. CV has some athletes, but can't match-up in the trenches. ... TROY 48, CV 12.

Newark Valley (2-3) at Trumansburg (2-3): The Cardinals are coming off a 37-14 loss to Tioga, while the Blue Raiders topped winless SVEC, 29-6.

Prediction: Trumansburg has fared a little better against coming opponents, but Newark Valley showed flashes of a run game against Tioga that could give the Blue Raiders problems. I'll take T-Burg's big-play potential. ... T-BURG 27, NV 21.

Union-Endicott (3-2) at Owego (1-4): The River Hawks are coming off a 47-14 loss to Maine-Endwell, while the Tigers dropped a 35-7 decision at Elmira.

Prediction: Elmira ran the ball very effectively against U-E, and Owego is big and physical up front. If the River Hawks can contain U-E's big-play potential, they'll be in good shape. ... OWEGO 27, U-E 21.

SVEC (0-5) at Groton (4-1): The Eagles are are coming off a 29-6 loss to Trumansburg, while the Red Haws dropped a 36-8 decision to Schuyler.

Prediction: Groton was averaging 60 points per game before being shut down by Schuyler. Granted it was against a weak schedule, but SVEC is winless and has been outscored by an average of 33-4. ... GROTON 60, SVEC 0.
