SECTION IV FIELD HOCKEY: TIOGA ANSWERS TOUGH LOSS AT WALTON WITH 2-1 WIN OVER A-H (22 PHOTOS) (October 13, 2026)

Valley Sports Report
AFTON — Tioga scored a pair of first-quarter goals, and held on for a 2-1 win over Afton-Harpursville here Tuesday afternoon in Section IV field hockey action.

"The girls came out determined to win this one after our heartbreaking loss to Walton Saturday," said Tioga assistant coach Miranda Szymanski. "It just shows how determined they still are to win even if sectionals are out of reach.

"We did have a few more good scoring chances but we just couldn’t find the back of the net again.

"We didn’t have practice yesterday so we did have a bit of a second-quarter slump, which is when they scored," added Szymanski. "They showed their grit and kept them from scoring again."

The Tigers improve to 5-10 after posting a 2-14 record in 2025.

"It was a great game between two very young teams," said Szymanski. "They are Class B, so we get extra points for winning that one.

"That’s five (wins) for the year and we have one more game to hopefully make it six," she added. "Quite a jump from last year."

Kaylene Sindoni, off a feed from Adelia Davis, scored in the early moments of the first quarter off a broken corner play.

"(The corner) went past our target, Adelia (Davis), on the circle and back to Cora (Szymanski), but she quickly gathered it and sent it back in to Adelia, then a quick pass to Kaylene for the great shot in the goal," said Szymanski.

Taylor Sindoni scored, off an assist from Ayla Gage in a sequence that began with a steal of a defensive corner by Davis, to make it 2-0 about six minutes later.

"They followed up the first goal with some great carries, passes and a final beautiful pass from Ayla (Gage) to Taylor (Sindoni) on post," said Szymanski. "Two really great goals."

A-H had a 5-4 edge in shots-on-goal, and Tioga a 7-4 advantage in penalty corners.

Vangie Decker recorded three goals in the cage for the Tigers, and Paige Fenton had one.

SATURDAY
Walton 2, Tioga 1

Tioga scored early in the third quarter to tie the game, but Walton netted the game-winner late in the same quarter to pull out a 2-1 win.

"The girls played their best game to date, great passing, really good hustle, and team spirit was high," said Tioga coach Aubrey Worthing.

"Our offensive corners looked good today, and we scored on one with a great rebound shot," she noted. "We nearly scored on another, but we were stopped short.

It was a very intense back-and-forth game, which I think caught Walton off guard a bit," said Worthing. "The whole field was used. It didn’t stay at one end or the other very long.

"Again, we are a young team and continue to grow every practice and every game," added Worthing. With this young team, we have already exceeded our expectations and I think a lot of other’s, too."

Emily Engelbert scored Tioga's goal.

Tioga had a 4-3 edge in shots-on-goal, while Waltonhad a 6-5 edge in penalty corners.
