SECTION IV FIELD HOCKEY: TIOGA FALLS 3-0 AT GREENE IN REGULAR-SEASON FINALE (18 PHOTOS) (October 16, 2026)
Valley Sports ReportGREENE — Greene scored a pair of goals late in the first quarter, and made them stand in a 3-0 win over Tioga in the regular-season finale here Thursday afternoon in Section IV field hockey action.
"Overall, we played well," said assistant coach Miranda Szymanski. "We had some strong restarts from our midfielders and center-back, and we were able to switch the field effectively to keep the ball moving.
"Our forwards also connected on several nice give-and-go plays, but Greene was very strong defensively and did an excellent job preventing shots-on-goal.
"We got into their end several times, but we just couldn’t win a corner or get a shot off," added Szymanski. "Greene is a very good team and came away with the win, but our girls played a great game against them."
Ali St. Germain scored with 2:59 remaining in the first quarter, and Deidre Colgan added a goal as time expired in the opening stanza to make it 2-0.
Halle Livingston, who assisted on the first goal of the game, scored with 4:48 remaining in the contest to provide the final margin.
Greene had a 27-0 advantage in shots-on-goal, and a 18-1 edge in penalty corners.
Vangie Decker recorded 24 saves in the cage for the Tigers.
"We had a tough time keeping the ball out of our feet, and Greene does a great job capitalizing on foot fouls to create quick restarts and, especially, corners," said Szymanski.
They really target the feet inside the circle to earn a corner and create a better scoring opportunity," she noted. "Last night, we had to defend 18 corners, and I believe only one resulted in a goal. Earlier in the season, we struggled much more with defending corners, so that was an area where we showed improvement.
We were also without one of our starting defenders due to the flu, and she is usually a key player on defensive corners, but a few other teammates stepped up and filled that role well.
"The real standout last night was our goalkeeper, Vangie Decker," added Szymanski. "She had an incredible game with 24 saves. All season, she has been working on becoming more comfortable with diving, and she looked very confident doing so last night."
Tioga wraps up the regular season with a 5-11 record, a big improvement over last year's 2-14 mark.
"With this game and the rest of the season, we saw huge improvements from previous years," said Szymanski. "Coach Worthing and I have been taking notes throughout the season to identify areas we need to focus on during next preseason.
"The great news is that we will have the same team coming back next year, so we’ll be able to pick up right where we left off and continue building toward even more wins.
"Our goal is to make Sectionals next year," she added. "We may have come up a little short this season, but the seeding meeting is Monday, so we’ll see where we stand."
