NTL VOLLEYBALL: ATHENS DROPS TIGHTLY-CONTESTED SWEEP TO WELLSBORO (16 PHOTOS) (October 20, 2026)
Valley Sports ReportATHENS — All three sets were close, but Athens came up on the short end in each one in a 3-0 loss to Wellsboro here Tuesday night in NTL volleyball action.
The Hornets won by scores of 25-22, 25-23, and 25-20.
"It was a hard-fought three-set match," said Athens coach Heather Darrow. "The scores were so close and in the first and second sets, we were a couple of errors away from taking them.
"We saw some really great volleyball and even in three sets, we had a total of 34 kills," she noted. "We were putting them down it was a back-and-forth game really.
"Again, we saw a lot of great play. There were a few times the ball landed an inch out, and with those kinds of errors you just have to keep swinging and keep trying," added Darrow. "We were right there. Wellsboro had some strong hitters tonight and they definitely helped us get ready for what's to come."
Senior Meg Wiles had eight points, including four aces, 25 setter assists and four digs, and junior Ellie Mosher had four points (two aces), 15 kills, two blocks and six digs to lead Athens, while sophomore Kayla Forbes had nine points, 15 digs, and two assists, and junior Lainey Vosburgh had three points and eight digs.
Senior Hannah Parrish had two points, four kills, and nine digs for the Wildcats, while freshman Evelyn Roy registered eight kills, one block, and two digs, senior Emma Mallare had three kills and three blocks, junior Kendall Galasso added two points and three digs, and sophomore Emi McQuay chipped in with four kills.
Darrow had plenty of good things to say about her team:
"Ellie Mosher not only crushed 15 (kills), she also serve-received and dug extremely well. She is a solid all-around player and is really stepping up in that leadership role.
"Kayla Forbes had 15 digs tonight and at least four were momentum changing. I love when she gets those digs, you can see the fire light up in her and you can see those girls all light up from that relentlessness.
"Emi McQuay saw time coming off the bench and she really had the golden touch — four kills in a very quick amount of time. Not only can she handle coming in from the bench and making an impact she also is so loud and supportive to her team, wherever she's at. I'm really proud of what she is showing in her leadership roles as a middle.
"Kendall Galasso had some great digs tonight and mixed up different shots. She keeps moving the ball around and keeps defense on their toes.
"Lainey Vosburgh served well and was reading the hitters well, making a nice impact in the back row.
"Evelyn Roy had some really nice shots and saves hitting in the middle and the outside tonight. She is really getting on top of the ball.
"Emma Mallare did a great job in the middle for us. She was a wall tonight and moved very well laterally.
"Hannah Parrish has really stepped up her defensive game and her shot selection is impressive. Tonight, a couple just fell out.
"And, of course, Meg Wiles did an excellent job moving the ball around and keeping the defense honest."
Athens, now 9-5, wraps up the regular season Thursday at home against Wyalusing.
