ATHENS — Freshman Everleigh Waring scored about 10 minutes into the game, and the Athens defense made it stand in a 1-0 win over Wyalusing here Thursday evening in a key NTL girls soccer match-up.

The Wildcats, now 11-3-3 overall, improve to 10-1-2 in NTL play, and can win the league title Saturday with a win over Wellsboro.

"It was a gutsy, gritty win after a tough game on Tuesday," said Athens coach Rich Pitts. "Wyalusing is a great team and we had to work for 80 minutes to get the result.

"We will prepare Friday for Saturday's game and we will give it our all Saturday morning," added Pitts.

Waring was in the right spot at the right time on the game's only goal, fielding the Wyalusing keeper's deflection of senior Brinley Nichols, and putting it into the net.

Athens had a 13-9 advantage in shots-on-goal, while Wyalusing had a 1-0 edge in corner kicks.

Junior Annika Lezak collected eight saves in the win for the Wildcats.

Athens hosts Wellsboro at 11 a.m. Saturday.
