Wendi Hammond, a grad student on the University of Albany softball team, saved one of her best performances of her final collegiate season for the biggest game to date this season, tossing a three-hitter in a 4-0 win over UMass-Lowell here Saturday in the championship game of the America East Conference tournament.
The win delivers an automatic bid for the Great Danes to the upcoming NCAA Division I National Championships. It was Albany’s first appearance in the championship game since 2013.
Hammond fanned six and walked none in seven shutout innings to improve to 24-8 on the season. It was her eighth shutout of the season, and her ERA dropped to 1.91.
Hammond gave up two hits in the first inning, then did not allow another base-runner until the sixth inning.
Albany, now 33-12, now awaits word on seeding and its opening-round opponent for the National Championships.
